PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) upon Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognising him with Nigeria’s second-highest national honor.

This prestigious award was announced during a bilateral meeting held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking a significant moment in the diplomatic relations between Nigeria and India.

Tinubu said: “Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries.

“You represent a very strong commitment in democratic values and norms, you have been doing a good job historically. Winning three consecutive elections in a complex society is a feat that we respect so much.

“I will confer on you today, the Prime Minister of India, Nigeria’s National Honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger. This to signify Nigerian appreciation and commitment to India as a partner”, he said.

The Indian Prime Minister pledged 20 tons of relief materials, while commiserating with Nigeria over the recent floods that ravaged several cities across the country, including the Maiduguri major flood incident.

Modi said the relief material is to support Tinubu administration’s ongoing humanitarian efforts.

Modi, who arrived Abuja Saturday evening, was received at Forecourt of the Villa at about 10:20 am Sunday.

Upon arrival, the Indian leader was welcomed with the Indian Anthem, after which a Guard of Honour, mounted by Brigade of Guards, rendered the Nigerian Anthem and led the visiting PM in inspection of the mounted parade.

This was followed by a 21-gun salute after which Modi inspected the Guard of Honour.

Tinubu then led Modi into his office for closed door talks.

Both leaders are expected to discuss and sign several bilateral agreements during their restricted meeting.

The visit also features some delegation-level talks and exchange of memoranda of understanding.

According to the Presidency, Tinubu and Modi will be seeking to strengthen the Nigerian-Indian ties during this visit.

“President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi will seek to strengthen Nigeria’s and India’s ties further during their bilateral discussions.

“Both leaders will exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to enhance collaboration in critical sectors,” the Presidency said Saturday.

Modi’s visit is the first by an Indian prime minister since Dr Manmohan Singh’s state visit in 2007, when the two nations established a strategic partnership.
