South-East Senators Appeal to Tinubu For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

From PAULINE PODKA, Abuja

A delegation of 15 federal lawmakers from the South-East region led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

They participated in a closed-door meeting with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.

The senators’ meeting with the Attorney-General followed the decision of the South-East governors to appeal directly to President Tinubu for Kanu’s freedom.

The senators argued that Kanu’s release is essential to restore peace and stability in the South-East region, which has been experiencing economic and social stagnation due to his continued incarceration.

They urged the Attorney General of the Federation to convey their message to President Tinubu and to use his position to terminate all charges brought against Kanu by the federal government.

They noted that political leaders, religious leaders, and stakeholders in the region have unanimously agreed that Kanu’s release is necessary for peace to return to the South-East.

The senators urged the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to communicate their message to President Tinubu and to use his influence to drop all charges against the IPOB leader.

Abaribe expressed optimism that the Attorney-General would influence the Federal Government to consider releasing Kanu, emphasizing that Kanu’s prolonged detention contributes to heightened insecurity and unrest in the South-East region.

Also, Abaribe disclosed that on behalf of the caucus, he met with Kanu at the headquarters of the Department of State Service (DSS) and Kanu has agreed to abide by the terms of any conditional release granted to him.
