Labour Suspends Strike
From PAULINE PODKA, Abuja
The organized Labour comprising of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), has suspended its nationwide indefinite strike.
The call off followed after signing an agreement with the Federal Government on Monday night, June 3, 2024, to resolve the minimum wage controversy.
The agreement was reached after a six-hour marathon meeting brokered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
The strike, which began on Monday, June 2, 2024, was called to demand a new minimum wage and protest the increase in electricity prices.
Giving update on the strike suspension, Labour said until they hear from their organs, the strike is still on.
This is to give room for uninterrupted meetings with the Tripartite Committee on the new national minimum wage.
This was confirmed by the TUC chairman, Festus Osifo, on Tuesday.
Details of the agreement state the following, that the President, Bola Tinubu, is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000.
The Tripartite Committee is to meet every day for the next one week to arrive at an agreeable National Minimum Wage.
Labour will convene a meeting of its organs to consider the commitment of the President.
Another point is that no worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action.
Earlier, the meeting between Labour and Federal Government ended in deadlock with another meeting scheduled for a later date.
