THE Rivers Peace Initiative (RPI) has called for responsible leadership and peaceful engagement for a lasting peace in Rivers State.

The group noted that State has experienced an extended period of political tension that has hindered governance, strained and polarised relationships and caused other setbacks for the citizens.

Convener of the Initiative, Obinna Ebogidi, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday, noted the declaration of a State of Emergency and appointment of a sole administrator by President Bola Tinubu, as fallouts from the unhealthy political environment in the state.

He stated: “Rivers State has experienced an extended period of political tension that has hindered governance, strained and polarised relationships like never before, discouraged investment, and disrupted everyday life for many of our citizens.

“In response, the federal government recently intervened a second time by declaring a State of Emergency and appointed a Sole Administrator to help stabilize the situation and oversee a return to democratic order within six months.

“While this step is viewed with concern by many, including the Rivers Peace Initiative, it reflects the depth of the challenges we have faced as a state since October 2023.”

According to the convener, the continuing friction between key arms of government (Executive and Legislature) had already placed significant strain on the state’s ability to function effectively.

The group called on political actors to restrain their actions and utterances to achieve lasting peace and move the state forward.

He continued: “It is, therefore, concerning that certain individuals and groups continue to take actions that risk aggravating the fragile situation. This includes sponsoring protests, spreading misinformation, and undermining ongoing efforts aimed at restoring order.

“The Rivers Peace Initiative urges all stakeholders to act with a sense of responsibility and restraint. Now is the time to prioritize the stability and long-term well-being of Rivers State over short-term political interests.”

The RPI further appealed to the political actors to commit peaceful engagement and responsible leadership and civil society groups to avoid becoming platforms for the escalation of tensions in the state.

Also, it urged security agencies to remain professional and proactive in maintaining public safety; religious and traditional leaders to encourage calm and unity within their communities.

The group also appealed to the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) to remain focused, transparent and inclusive in the exercise of his duties.

“Rivers State must not be allowed to drift further into instability. All hands must be on deck to support the path to peace and good governance. Our collective future depends on it. Let us act with purpose. Let peace take root. Let Rivers move forward,” the convener appealed.
