TRAGEDY struck along G.U. Ake Road, Eliozu in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Monday night, as a hit-and-run driver crushed four persons and wounded two passersby.
It was gathered that the car was on speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle, and rammed into walkway, killing four pedestrians instantly.
They sources could not identify those that lost their lives, saying it occurred close to Unity Filling Station in Eliozu.
The sources disclosed that the Rumuokoro Police Ambulance evacuated the bodies early morning of Tuesday.
State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police (SP), has confirmed the accident.
She also confirmed that four persons died in the accident and two wounded.
According to her, the incident occurred at about 11:43pm, when the driver identified as Benson Michael, 36 years old, lost control of a Toyota Camry and collided with pedestrians.
Iringe-Koko disclosed: “The Command wishes to inform the public of a fatal motor accident that occurred on 12th May, 2025, at about 23:42 hours, along G.U. Ake Road.
“One Benson Peter Michael, male, 36 years old, and the driver of a Toyota Camry with registration number ABJ 10 EM, lost control of the vehicle and collided with six pedestrians.
“Tragically, four of the pedestrians were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to BMH Hospital for medical attention.
“The driver of the vehicle is currently in custody, while the accidented vehicle has been recovered and taken to the station.
“The corpses of the deceased have been deposited at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) Mortuary.”
She said the case would be transferred to the State Traffic Department for further investigation.
“The Command deeply regrets the unfortunate incident and assures the public that justice will be served.”
