Late Christian Chukwu

CHRISTIAN Chukwu, a former head coach of the Super Eagles and legendary captain of the Nigerian national team, has passed away at the age of 74.

Reports indicate that Chukwu died on Saturday, marking the end of an era for Nigerian football. Fondly known as “Chairman,” Chukwu was a towering figure in the sport, both on and off the pitch.

He famously captained the Green Eagles — as the national team was then known — to Nigeria’s historic first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980, a moment that remains etched in the nation’s football folklore.

Chukwu later transitioned to coaching, eventually leading the Super Eagles as head coach and contributing immensely to the development of the game in Nigeria.
